i am new to this game playing since 2 days. completed 27 missions. killed 2 pirate teams, and rewarded both the times with secret service weapon cl2. could not find an artifact. made enough credit around 400,000 cr. but cannot upgrade the ship for hyper jump.
i was reading the forum and had seen the location of 2nd artifact next to hu system. i couldn't find any side missions. as i said i completed 2 side missions but only awarded 2 new weapons.
Please help me in finding the artifact. or how to upgrade the ship with out artifacts?
thanks guys. i want to play this game.

I was a little confused at first when I started playing too, because you can have bucket loads of cash, but without the artefacts, you cannot upgrade your ship.

Firstly, all systems with artefacts in them have a little green diamond next to them, which look like this. If you cannot see this next to a system, then there is no artefact contained within it. Its practically impossible to miss out on where the artefacts are as the game even alerts you when you enter a system if an artefact remains.

Now, from what I understand you're at the stage where you need to buy a new hyper drive so you can jump to the next system?

New drives are rewarded only via storyline progression, and then you have to go and find a system with a high enough tech level in which to get the drive fitted.

So in the starting parsec of LALANDE the system with the highest tech level is either OBAS or PACHEE. The next parsec is BARNARD, which actually contains three artefacts, http://www.gog.com/upload/temp/53c4483cfdeba730801339298bdba8bce2f271e4.png]so look closely at this map.

If you get really suck, have a look at this Universal Map, but be warned, it contains spoilers!

Good luck, just post again if you run into any more trouble.

In the starting parsec of LALANDE there are no side quests, only missions which you can take from space stations.

Did I solve the problem? I forgot to ask.
Yeah, you should mark that as a solution so other people know it's solved when they're looking at the threads list. =)
Thank goodness for that help! I nearly gave up on this game. They really need to update this game with a few hints about tech levels. I wandered around for a while before figuring out the trick. The only reason I stuck with the game so long is that I'd played "Elite" clones before and this one seemed interesting. I should have figured there would be a convoluted trick to relegating you to a certain sector.

Just so people know, this is a trading, mission generating world. Expect to do a ton of trading and random missions that will add nothing but a little money to your bank account. That's the style the devs are going for. The game is very similar to Elite. (Or as I know it, Odyssey 3011 for XBLIG which is yet ANOTHER Elite clone) That's right, there were TWO Elite clones on the 360. Go figure.
