Sure, if you like space simulators, you might think this is about average. However, if you're the kind of guy who likes to feel like he's a real space-ship captain, this one's a keeper. Customizing your ship's Chassis is only the beginning of crafting your ship, and it helps in whatever you really want to do. Did I mention freedom to do anything? That's right, you can start your own private war against pirates, merchants, trade stations, the space security forces, just about anyone, or if you don't want to make enemies with anyone in particular, you can take up the merchant's trade, or become a smuggler.
Any way you make money, you can still go through the game pretty much the same way. The news is nice, and there are many side missions to pursue. The characters are believable, to a degree, and they certainly grow on you. The story's good, to be sure, but the only problem is it plays out pretty much one way. I'm sure nothing really compares to certain other RPGs by Bioware and Black Isle, but Darkstar doesn't even try to integrate choice-making into the Main Storyline.
Anyway, if you just want to become Captain of your own Enterprise, and do whatever you please, Darkstar provides a universe to do what you will. How well you like what's in it, is dependent upon you.
If you went from Privateer to Darkstar One, you should also try Freelancer. It was made by Chris Roberts, the brain behind Privateer, so you should like it. :)
It also has multiplayer capabilities and a deeper living world. I've just started Darkstar One an am enjoying it so far. But I will say Freelancer has a MUCH richer universe, in terms of the sense that life is going on around you at all times as others go about their business in space, only worried about you if you're an enemy. The factioning system is also more in-depth and goes a long way to make that sense of a breathing world.
I still hope we will see Freelancer someday here at gog.com One of the best action simulators ever made.
Suffice to say i had huge expectations for this game and it doesn't come anywhere near fullfilling them. Freelancer, while a very flawed game as well is ten times better than this heap of dung.

I can't believe GOG still doesn't have Freelancer available. It seems many PC gamers love that game.

Agreed! About choice-making, please not that here is plenty of that:

- in the way that you play some missions that do have choices.

- in the missions that you decide to pick (or not).

- in your choice of career and actions that you take (doing piracy, smuggling, hauling cargo, etc).

Maybe not in the main storyline (dunno, still did not finish it), but there is plenty of decision-making at every step, enough to RP a bit.
