I have a member of my party equipped with a crossbow and have attempted to fire (M) at an enemy. However, I get a warning tone and a symbol over the enemy (see image). Does anyone know why? Is it related to distance, lack of ammo, or something else entirely?

Thanks,

P.

It means there is no clear line of fire. In this example it's blocked by the redhead in front of your character. Once your guys reach higher skills with bows it becomes less of a problem.

Thanks for that. On a tangent, I note that I could fire my crossbow without having what appeared to be any ammo in my inventory. Later, in one fight, I then picked up quarrels from a dead body. If I can seemingly use the crossbow without ammo, what are these for?

Hmm...that sounds like a bug.
