I want to run Darklands in a large window so that I can see the Darklands Quest third-party tool onscreen at the same time (https://github.com/ricardopinedathen/darklands-quest)

In the Dosbox settings I've set the following properties:

[sdl]
fullscreen=false
fulldouble=true
fullresolution=original
windowresolution=1280x960

When I run Darklands it initally displays at this resolution, then almost immediately (once past the autoexec part), reverts to a much smaller window.

Any ideas?

Try changing output to ddraw; the option should be in that same block (SDL). In my experience it has the best chance of working in most systems.
