My stone is currently stuck at 25. Alchemists all tell me they can't upgrade it. I tried finding upgrades at universities but it seems my skills/stats aren't good enough.

Has anybody been able to upgrade beyond 25? And if so, how? I'm currently training Speak Latin and Read/Write in hopes that this will help but I'm not sure

iirc I usually get it at least as high as 30, but it has been a while since I've played. Universities do have better philosopher's stones and I've always gotten my final upgrade from them, but don't expect miracles like 50.

-edit-
Don't know about Read&Write, but SpeakLatin definitely helps at universities.

If you can find him, St. Thomas Aquinas really helps when dealing with universities: He boosts Int, R/W and Spk L, as well as giving a direct boost to reputation with them.

There are other saints that can help, but you'll probably need several to achieve the same effect.
I have an alchemist who's Alchemy skill is 35, INT is 45 but my PhStone is 0!

I've made one potion so far but that was lucky as i only had a 35% chance of success. So how come my Philosopher's stone is so low, none existent? Would it be to do with during char creation when you pick your last 'Profession', in the same way this determines what armour you start with etc? That's all i can think of as maybe i gave my Alchemist a religous profession(to give him some starting armour) on his last training before going into the adventure?

I couldn't find this mentioned in the manual.
Ok, I've boosted Speak Latin and Read/Write and used Thomas of Aquinas to get my first university upgrade. It was expensive but my stone is at 28 now. I'm still trying to get a further upgrade.

ThorChild, you always start at 0 but if you visit alchemists in towns (side streets -> guilds specialising in less violent occupations -> astrologer's lane) you can buy upgrades to your stone. Alchemists can also provide training in Alchemy skill. Depending on Charisma of your spokesperson and reputation you could get training for less than 25 groshen. University training is about 4-5 times as expensive but not worth it because alchemists can train you to 99 skill too. If you train a skill you won't always get a skill increase for every day you train so be careful and make sure you have some fund to pay for the training and the Inn where you must stay to get training.
Thanks gnarbag, it has been a while since i last played and i had thought i'd just messed up char generation. I've visited a university and now have a small philosopher's stone rating, result.

You should start with Alchemists to get upgrades. They're easier and cheaper.
Yep, noted. I just tried the first place i found and that happened to be a university, but i'll look for the cheaper option next time, and cheers for the advice.
