In Darklands, each character can have only 64 different types of items in their inventory. Anything bought or picked up beyond this limit is silently deleted (!). Note that the height of the "scroll" in a character's inventory is 14 different kinds of items. So if you have more than this, take note of the item at the bottom of the scroll and keep scrolling down, repeating as necessary. The next batch of up to 14 comes when that last item previously noted scrolls out of view. Then you can quickly determine how many types of items you have in a character's inventory by taking multiples of 14 plus any excess. Alchemical inputs and outputs take up the most space so I have my alchemist store all the raw materials and my monk holds on to the finished products. This way I don't really have to worry about that limit.

I'm reasonably sure that your alchemist doesn't have to be in possession of any of the alchemical materials. It looks to see what your party has in total.

I always make my leader the alchemist, and the problem that arises is generally going through the Fortress Monastery, getting all the armour from the various dead opponents. If you use potions on them while fighting, then when you have killed them, the armour degrades. So some guys have 18q plate, some 19, 20, 16, whatever. That really starts to mess up your inventory count if you have all the alchemical materials plus some 35q elements that you might have picked up along the way.

So I let someone else hold all the alchemical ingredients.
I always sell 35q alchemical ingredients. The higher quality doesn't seem to contribute anything to the process.
Also note that if you exceed 255 items you will induce the infamous "neon hair" bug (one of a numbers of ways of doing so, probably), and if you exceed a similarly high number of items stored at the Inn you may discover you have lost some or all of them when you go back to retrieve them.
