Hi! I'm looking for an easy, user-friendly Character Editor that works for the GOG release of Darklands. I've been to the sites most often recommended but don't understand how they work. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Look in the directory C:\GOG Games\Darklands\DARKLAND, or its equivalent on however you did your installation, and look for (but do not yet try to open) a file called "EDITOR.EXE". It's a built-in Darklands editor.

If EDITOR.EXE is there, then you can use standalone DOSBox to run it (make sure Darklands is not open!).

I, or probably a multitude of users here, could help you to get DOSBox to run, if ya need.

Upon further searching I do not find any file called editor.exe in my darklands folder(s). Does this editor come with the game installation? I have both a steam version and the gog version and neither of them have a editor.exe file.

This information is coming in rather late for you I'm afraid, but my favorite editor is CharacterEditor2.2 from the files area of the group. The DL group is very old— both predating and outliving its former host Yahoo I believe— and is associated with darklands.net. Go ahead and join it.

https://groups.io/g/darklands/files

I'm afraid my copy of the game is equally old, so I cannot comment on why or whether the aforementioned EDITOR.EXE is not included in GOG's package. I hope it is, since it and the jukebox were originally released, with 3.5" diskettes physically mailed to customers, as part of MPS' final update version and bugfix for darklands.

* EDITOR.EXE is ideal for editing inventory.
* CharacterEditor2.2 is deal for everything else, including quest viewing, teleporting, fiddling with the map seed, you name it.
