There was a character editor released soon after the game and was wondering if it came with this release. If not, does it work with this version?

Yes, thank you! I will and run this with Dosbox.
Tickle me like an oblate, but I have no idea how to run the editor, could someone here help me?
Where does the GOG version save to? I'm successfully saving, but to where is a mystery.
@pslblog

If using Windows 7, try:
"C:\Users\{profile name}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Darklands\DARKLAND\SAVES"
Where {profile name} varies. Win7 uses \VirtualStore\ to avoid writing to places that need admin permissions, and what is in there will override the files in the real directories.

Your kindness and software acumen make you a joy to behold. Thank you very much.

I managed to extract the save files, now I'm wrestling with W7 to get it to acknowledge there is a AppData folder. God I miss W2K.

Solution: Use a cmd.exe box to access the virtualstore saved file and copy it out to someplace real on the disk (for old times sake I used \mps\darklands). Then manually re-insert the modified save file back into the real \Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Darklands\DARKLAND\SAVES file next to the DEFAULT file. Playable and works.

Protip: Install the game into any other directory OTHER than Program Files. Makes it easier to find saves instead of directory diving.

For example, I installed my copy of the game into C:\Darklands and my saves are in C:\Darklands\DARKLAND. It also helps when trying to use DOSBox to get the character editor running :D.

This is the way to go. I'm glad that I learned about Junctions in W7, and why to avoid them whenever possible. I'm certain they make sense for managing large file systems. I'm sure they are a hideous pain otherwise.
