wayreth: Hi there. I really fancy the music from Darklands. Does anyone know where to find similar music on the web? I feel a bit disappointed at the fact that the Darklands' soundtrack from GOG isn't exactly the same as the one in-game. Still, it's better than nothing, eh? :) Thank you for your time.
Hi Wayreth, et al., …
Yeah, I'm disappointed in that too.
The files that were packaged up with the game ever since it first appeared on GOG under the publisher "Tomo Inc." in 2011 are the same ones I had collected from various sites and reposted up on my Darklands Domain site ( darklands.net ) merely as a sampling of examples which were based on original period tunes related to what is found in the game; But, with I think perhaps two exceptions, what's listed is not precisely like what is actually in the game.
Dr. Jeffrey Briggs himself designed the music for the game based on historically accurate sources, but did make some alterations in order to fit as necessary with the setting of a video game. Most are quite close to the originals, while a few are more of the "inspired by" variety.
Did you just want a way to listen to all the different tunes available in the game? Or were you hoping for some MIDI or MP3 files you could use on different devices and use cases?
If the former, then you could use the "Jukebox" utility that originally came on the version 7 upgrade disk -- aka the "Bonus" disk. It should be in the game's root directory C:\DARKLAND\, where instead of running DARKLAND.EXE you would run JUKEBOX.EXE. If this executable is not in your root Darklands folder you can get it as a download here:
http://www.darklands.net/files/dlbonus.zip There have been some examples I've run across where people have done some sampled recordings in fairly high fidelity formats. Some better than others. I myself had a project about 15 years ago to RE them, but unfortunately was only keeping local copies and lost the whole project when the HDD crashed (ugh! I should have known better) and just haven't found time since to really dig into it again -- someday! But, the entire site needs an overhaul, and adding better recordings should be one of those line-items on the to-do list.
Anyway, a new publisher, Ziggurat Interactive, now has rights to the Darklands IP. I don't know what involvement Tommo or Night Dive Studios (or their partnership Retroism) might still have in the equation, if any. But a lot of the goodies bundled with Darklands could be improved, e.g.: quality of the PDFs for the Manual, Cluebook, Map, etc.; the German versions of those, as well as Italian and French materials (which I have collected); make the Bonus Disk utilities (Art Gallery, Jukebox, and Character Editor) featured items; include the Alchemical Symbols sheet that shipped with the original MPS distribution of the CD-ROM; and, of course, better music files. What there is now all came either from the Darklands Domain site, the Darklands SIG on Yahoo!Groups (now on Groups.io), or ReplacementDocs. I'm hoping that we will be able to work with the current Darklands IP principals to get these improvements in place.
Thanks for keeping the interest in Darklands alive!
Cheers!
