I think that Darklands would make a great tabeltop RPG. Unfortunately, no official pen-and-paper adaptation was ever released, so I decided to write one myself (and call it Dark Realms). The game has a 2d6-based engine.

You can download v0.1 here:

The game is by no means complete, but character creation, some occupations, skills, equipment and combat rules are included. Feedback is welcome.
Thanks dude. this is awesome!
There is still a lot to do, but the basics are there. If you have any ideas, comments, critique, feel free to post it here.
Very interesting concept. I just got Darklands and think it is very awesome, I've been looking for a good 'realistic' rpg. I'll have to try this out with my little brother sometime.

Can I suggest a couple of old paper RPG's that might offer inspiration? Ars Magica and Maelstrom (old paperback by Alexander Scott). I suggest these because, in my experience, they won the prize for capturing the feeling of the moment....drawing you into the story and 'reality' as it was understood in that place and time. Maybe browsing through them might inspire extra ideas?

Really wish you the best. This game was a wasted gem and it's great to see it still has fans :)

Great idea! I've always been frustrated at the lack of historical RPGs and tabletop RPGs fare little better than cRPGs in that regard unfortunately.

I'm curious why you decided to not use a combat system closer to Darklands. It may be a bit more complex than most systems but the 3 level 'roll to hit > to penetrate > for damage' is a really innovative way to accurately simulate the unique capabilities of the various armor and weapons without oversimplifying it down to basic DRMs.

Admitedly I come from a background of tabletop wargaming more so than RPGs but if you wanted to put some more detail into the combat system I would also suggest looking at some skirmish-scale miniatures rules like Chevauchee by Skirmisher Pub or Sworplay by Two Hour Wargames.

Also, a historical note, the thaler didn't emerge until the latter 15th century under Emperor Frederick III & Archduke Sigismund von Habsburg as Austrian silver mining expanded and the Florin was devalued as the Medicis lost power leading up to the Italian Wars. If you want to simplify the currency system I would suggest just reducing prices down to pfennigs. (as Darklands does in the vendor screens)

Wondering if you ever went any farther with this or contacting the developer of the game? I am creating a dark fantasy tabletop RPG called Demon Gate that took a lot of influence from this game. I am with Arcanum Syndicate and would like to talk with you some more on the topic. Good luck!
