Getting started can be a bit daunting in this game. For me, it helped to 'arse around' a bit on my first try: starting with the pre-made characters, getting jobs to earn a bit of cash, walk around towns during the night to gain experience in fights etc., before heading off into the countryside. When I felt more proficient, I restarted and spent a lot of time in character generation.

Also, there is a lot of wisdom to be found in the official Darklands FAQ.
Thank you very much for your help
There's the usual advice I hear a lot of: Loiter in the park during the night until you're inevitably attacked by thugs. They're pretty weak. Kill them to get your fighting stats up, then sell their armor. Just don't bother with cloth. Merchants won't buy it. Repeat several times, buy some decent gear, and that's a good start.

Only problem there is it takes forever to heal, should someone get seriously thumped. Healing at an inn gets expensive if you can't make more money than the room costs. I suppose if you're clever you can pray to a saint that heals.

Still, the money you make that way will be pocket change compared to doing quests for the banks or the city.
A Little tip for healing on the cheap side since staying at an inn will run you dry on cash quick! Exit the town press F8 and camp in the wilderness, make sure you leave at least on party member on guard! You can loiter in close to towns without too much risk but if you do so try to make sure you select someone in your party that has a high wood wise skill (WdWs) and has decent perception as the leader. If your risk is getting a little high, just pick up stakes and move else where or move back into town and rack out a night in the scenic grove then head back out into the country, your risk should drop and you'll be free to camp out again.
