Just wanted to follow up here with a couple updates if anyone is interested;
1. Somehow the stars have aligned and on the planet there are at least 2 people doing stuff in the Dark Reign 2 code currently! Myself, basically just poking around, and then THIS GUY who is investigating integrating a new multiplayer server system to replace WON!

Here are some of the topics I have been thinking about covering:
- Game variable registry / update command structure (for example the way to read the current graphics settings via the console and change them, this system is used both from the console as well as from within the code/scripts)
- The console (super cool tool available via ctrl+alt+f10) that lets you look into various settings/game state vars while the game is running
- Interface system (how all of the menus/2D user interfaces are defined/constructed)
- Asset system (how all of the game content is defined such as the UI, levels, etc)
What I have realized is that this game engine had some serious engineering put into it, and it is very capable. You can see this as well in Battlezone 2 which is from the same era, and then also many subsequent titles:
