If you dislike writing copious notes, (or don't want to try and write in the dark, when you turned off the lights on purpose to enhance the game atmosphere), screenshots are very helpful in this game. If something seems like it might be important later, just take a screenshot of it.
(There's a freeware program called PrintKey to do this for anyone who doesn't have one already installed. PrintKey has the advantage that it will pop up over the running program any time the PrintScreen key is pressed, thus allowing easy reloading access to shots you took several rooms back without interrupting the gameflow.)

Or...you could use a walkthrough instead of taking notes. The two I've used are:

C'mon, where's the fun in using a walkthrough ? ;)
I mean, if you're really stuck, then sure, i guess. Games are supposed to be fun, not frustrating, and i know how easy it is to get frustrated with adventure games. Usually when/if i reach that point i stop playing for a couple of days and then get back into it.
Half the fun in games like the Journal is taking you own notes and making your own drawings and piece togheter the back story...
I have to agree with Namur. Dark Fall in general is "just tough enough"--- not like, say, that original Myst music puzzle where if you weren't lucky enough to be born with perfect pitch, it's walkthrough time, because even then you'll spend 20 minutes making miniscule adjustments to the sliders to get them juuuuuust right.
I find the Universal Hint System to be a good compromise for most games when stuck, because you can get anything from a nudge in the right direction, such as "have you seen anything that looks like the symbols on that wall anywhere else?", to full-blown "go here and do A, B, C with objects R, S, and T you get from locations X, Y, and Z".
