I have two issues with this game. One I think I have solved, the other I still need help with if there is a solution.

1. I just started playing this game and I am enjoying it. Very atmospheric and not too bad writing. I had an issue saving. When I saved the files saved as .txt files. Freaked me out because I played for about 2 hours and made many saves. I was able to change the extension to .sav and it worked. The data is saved in the txt file correctly.

2. Screen size. Because the game changes the screen save, the save/load window is so big I have a hard time getting to the field to save/load a saved game. Has anyone else been able to overcome this problem? Maybe forcing the game to run in a window or at a higher resolution or something inbetween. Any suggestions and help will be much appreciated.

Hi! I'm a little confused about your first point - the game uses .txt files for saves - I believe it's something along the lines of "darkfallsave.txt". I make multiple saves during games so I just always rename it so save1.txt, save2.txt, etc. Is there a problem with how the saves are working on your machine? Could describe in detail the problem?

Regarding the second part, whenever I play my desktop is automatically resized to 640 x 480 (the game's resolution) so I never have any problems because the box never is bigger than the screen. I think generally you can set it to do this on your desktop or not - do you have it set to resize the screen automatically? On the other hand, it sounds like that's already happening if it's not running in a border or a window. So just to confirm, is it that the save window is bigger than the actual screen, therefore it's going off of the screen?
Bit late to the party here, but I'm having a similar problem to OP.

I saved my game a few hours into the game and came back to it today. Hitting "Load Game" on the menu screen brings me straight to the folder in My Documents where I saved the .txt file (I just went with "Save.txt). However, when I open the save file, the game cuts to black for a split-second and then goes back to the menu screen.

I tried renaming the file to all lowercase, adding ".sav" to the end, all to no avail. It's as if the game parses the file, finds nothing useful and sends me back to square one.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I don't see myself ever having the time or patience to finish the game in one sitting, so I'll have to give up on ever playing it again if the save function is broken. Thanks.

Yeah, this game is a little too long to play in one sitting unless you know all the answers.

I will say that in my experience with the game (playing it on CD for 3 years before getting the GOG version and subsequently using that) the game has always used a .txt file, and if you open it in notepad you'll see that it uses a very simply way of tracking where you are and what items you have. The name also doesn't matter; I've called my save games all sorts of things before.

I've never had this issue, which makes me think it might be a compatibility issue. What operating system are you running?
