I'm addressing this to GOG and to the license-holder: please let us download the original release of Dark Fall 2 again, either instead of or in addition to the so-called "Director's Cut."
I bought Dark Fall 2 when it first came out and really liked it. When the Director's Cut was released a few years later, I bought that too and absolutely hated it. A few minor things were improved, sure, but so much was changed or removed that didn't need to be, and the revised story was far, far less interesting.
Unfortunately, when I moved, I lost my copy of Dark Fall 2, and when I saw that it was on GOG and read on the forum that it was the original and not the Director's Cut, I bought it (this was before it was removed for sale). But now that it's up for sale again, it's the Director's Cut, with no option to download the original version anymore!
I would just use the old installer for the game, if I had it saved on my hard drive. But I don't, as I trusted you to keep the game that I bought available for me.
Please let us download the original release of Dark Fall 2. Either replace the Director's Cut with the original, or just add the original as a bonus (like the original versions of "Broken Sword" 1 and 2 that you have available along with their Director's Cuts).

It's back as a bonus download.

There is one small caveat, though, and that is we are no longer providing support for the original version of Dark Fall 2. Please keep that in mind :)

Thanks for doing this. I made a point of downloading the older version recently because I suspected that when the game returned to GOG it would be as the DC edition (which I have nothing against, but it's 'different' rather than being inherently improved from the original). With the old one up again, I don't need fear accidentally deleting it in a moment of forgetfulness.

I think anyone who wants the original version will find the lack of support far preferable to not having it at all.

Lack of support? Or not having it at all?
I think I'd much rather have lack of support, thanks.
Wonderful announcement, thank you GOG! This is why I love this site.

Oh I'd downloaded the new installer and got rid of my old copy just thinking that the installer had been updated. Hadn't realised it was a different version of the game. Just as well you asked GOG for the old version again, or I'd have not noticed until I went to play.

It probably wouldn't have bothered me I didn't get to play much of the game originally, but it is nice to have choice.
What are the differences between the 2 versions (no spoiler please)?

Here's what I remember:

1. Certain real-time affects have been added. For instance, in the very beginning of the game, there is a small town. In the original version it was silent and the fog doesn't move. In the Director's cut, the smoke moves, people can be heard having a good time at the local bar, and there's a drunk dude outside. There are many other changes in the rest of the game, such as moving water, flickering candles and lights, etc.

2. You can now talk to certain ghosts.

3. A conversation you have with a certain character has been changed. On one hand, the environment around this character is more fleshed out, but on the other hand the conversation itself has been shortened.

4. A lot of the puzzle solutions have been changed.

5. At one point in the game there is a puzzle where you have to find a certain number of designs. In the original, there were more than you needed, leading to some confusion as to where to use them. The extras have been removed.

6. In the original game there was a whole area that you didn't have to visit. In the director's cut a puzzle has been revised so that you do have to visit this location.

7. Someone said the audio in the "scene reenactment" at the lighthouse museum has been changed; I don't remember the original well enough to comment on that.

8. A new computer terminal is outside the lighthouse museum. It just provides a little more info and atmosphere.

All in all, I feel that #s 1, 4-6, and 8 are good changes that make the game better. #s 2 and 3 were not good changes and ruined the scenes they are in, in my opinion. Like I said I can't comment on 7.

Isn't that what I said?

I suppose you could read it as "lack of support is preferable to not having support at all", but that's a bit like saying "half a dozen is better than six". Of course, I meant "lack of support is preferable to not having the original version at all". ^_^

Whatever, I think GOG did a good thing.

Edit: And so did you, if I read your post more carefully. So yes, I think he was just agreeing with you, and it was indeed "what you just said".

The structure of the game was also completely changed. The original version is rather nonlinear, with a lot of exploration involved. The Director's Cut pretty much railroads you, becoming an entirely linear affair (not that linear is bad, it just doesn't suit this particular game very well). In addition, the original version of the game gave most of the story in the form of various clues that the player had to piece together (it wasn't that difficult to figure out, but it's nice that things aren't spelled out 100%), but the Director's Cut's "expansion" of the plot mostly came in the form of spoon-feeding things to you, as well as the introduction of a few minor plot holes.

First of all, thank you for doing this. Whenever GOG has the opportunity to keep prior versions of games available, I hope you'll do it (just as if they were games we purchased on disc at retail, where we could decide to patch/update the game or not).

Now a question: If we install one version of the DF2, followed by the other, will the two versions conflict with each other on our comps, or are they installed into entirely separate folders and registries?

I concider the Director's Cut to be much better than the original version. The original version, which according to the developer was released before he considered it finished due pressure from the publisher, was such a disappointment after the brilliant first game. The story was incomprehensible, some puzzles were so silly and out of context they completely destroyed the mood etc.. Playing the Director's Cut I felt Boakes had addressed every single problem I had with the original and added some stuff that gave the game the atmosphere a horror story based game needs.

Great to have the option to try both though! I have far to many copies, both physical and downloads, of Boakes' games as it is, but I may just buy the gog Dark Falls anyway.:)
