D: Director's Cut included a novel. Unfortunately, it's in Japanese only, but its existence is barely aknowledged by anyone.
I've extracted the text in case anyone wants to read it outside of the game or translate it for other fans.
Enjoy.

I just noticed this months after your original post. Thank you so much! I hope I'll get around to reading it sometime just to see how it compares to the game (where the story was apparently more or less an afterthought); a translation, however, would be a huge undertaking...
If I may be so daring, would you still happen to have the raw scan of the novel too?
No scan exists as far as I can tell (and no physical copy of the novel itself), as this stuff was ripped straight from the script files from the 3DO Director's Cut and cleaned up from the script commands.

I did write a short test program to parse the scripts on PC and basically re-create the experience on PC, but it's pretty ugly for now (writes the text to the debug prompt while doing some of the commands, such as switching images, etc.), so I'd need to rewrite it from scratch and translate the text to actually make it a good 'port'. :)

Stephen Kick told me he'll gladly include the novel as a bonus to the Steam/GOG re-release, but I'm still waiting for a translator friend of mine to finish the first chapter (and I'm p. busy for the next few months too), so I can put together a better proof of concept (full first chapter w/ some PC functionality, such as scalable window, etc).

As far as I've managed to understand, the novel is more of a prequel/setup to the events from the original game.

Thank you so much for sharing this!!
Hi thanks, the game's opening is intriguing, I am attracted by it, and the novel will surely add sth interesting to the gaming experience.

BTW, do you know how to save the game? It seems no such option.

There is no option to save the game. It must be completed within 2 hours or, you know, you die...
It doesn't explicitly tell you this in-game.
Very cool. Thank you.
