bdbass: Third person view is a cheating view. You're able to take cover (in this situation the character can't see anything) but you as the player can see everything. So first person is way better for immersion. I'm glad the went for FPV
What you say is partly true. Yes, visually, you may get a bit more information if it's third person, but that depends on the implementation. A third person camera over the character's shoulder should give you a wider FOV and some awareness on the character's surroundings, but may not offer a distinct advantage when the character is behind cover (it all depends on the angle).
It is also true that on 1st person view, you lack awareness on your surroundings. If you were doing it for real, you know when you're out of cover, at least partially, by touch. This feedback is not there when in FPV, for the simple reason that, unless you're playing in an ultra-wide big size monitor, your field of view is restricted to about 60 degrees of arch, as opposed to more than 120 degrees that you have IRL. Third person perspective fixes that (partially) by backing up the camera so the 60 degrees of the screen cover what you would get normally with the wider angle from the character's perspective.
As far as gameplay goes, FPV is good if you want to use ranged weapons and shoot, because it's easier to line up the shots. However, for infiltration/melee, 3rd person is a superior way to go. The reason? IRL, you have proprioception, which is the awareness on where your arms and legs are placed and how they're bent in relation to the rest of your body, even if you can't see them (because it's pitch dark, for instance). This is handled by nervous feedback from your joints and tendons This ability is CRUCIAL when engaging in a real melee fight. FPV in a computer cuts that, but 3rd person allows you to see what your character's body is doing. This is the real big difference.
