before I got through his quests, the clotehs were marked as quest items, but some time aftter finishing the johnny quest line, ALL the clotehs of his I had had the quest markers removed.

Aw crap... I was a bit premature.

While the pants and such from earlier ARE non-quest items.... after doing the gig with the rest of the band, I now have a quest item of johnnys jacket and glasses again :-s

So some of them are non-quest.... and some are quest.
