Hiring modders is not uncommon (see Valve), maybe some of them would love to work officially on improving the AI.

With the 48,215 people in the credits, the hack extortion, the returns and possible law suits, I think hiring new people would be far from the realm of the possible.

Hack extortion yeah that's a common thing these days when company's are seemingly failing to push through to their delivery date it's a tactic and they will abuse any avenue for those $$$ and credit and advertising them selves as the good guy.

It also leads to corporate write offs and legal avoidances. the sad sad tear shed in the public eye for the *sniff* dastardly deed.
Mods are great...but the thing about mods is that the best time to make the mods and to install them is after the game developer has issued its final game patch. Otherwise, you get stuck with the "I just updated the game and now most of my mods don't work! What gives?" syndrome.
