So are there levels to weapons that we don't see? For example - got 2 katana's, one is rare/iconic and and the other uncommon. The uncommon one does 250dps and the rare one does 160dps.

I can go into crafting to upgrade the rare/iconic weapon, but it looks like i would have to do multiple upgrades to get it close to the uncommon weapon.

So i'm guessing each weapon has a lvl or something that we just cant see?
Is it even worth upgrading a weapon? Considering how often guns drop it seems like at least for guns there's not much point in upgrading since someone will just drop a better one in a short while.

Weapon "quality" (common, rare, epic, whatever) defines an amount of mod slots and random bonuses, like bonus crit damage or bonus crit chance.

Weapon level defines a basic damage amount.

Legendary weapon of lower level can be a piece of trash compared to common weapon of higher level. The same awful item leveling problem as witcher 3 had.

Upgrading weapon is not worth it at all. With each iteration amount of components required for upgrade increases, and at some point it gets too high. It is okay to upgrade a weapon one or two times, but then you can throw it into a dumpster.

Likely. Drops seem to scale with your level but iconic doesn't seem to. Also crafting isn't viable unless you play a technological build which is very lame because it makes crafting useless for other playstyles. Only upgrading could be useful at some point if you are struggling or stuck but I'm playing melee in hard and it's being not to hard so.

About the rarity, epic/legends are pretty op if you can attach mods to them. For example I have a legendary shirt with 6 slots, base stat doesn't matter too much if I can attach 6 defense mods. Too broken to be honest.
common: weak
epic: stronk
What about the iconic weapons? I'm guessing those are basically just cosmetic as far as the iconic part goes? So unless I'm really invested in the weapons appearance, they aren't worth upgrading either?

Iconic ones have unique affects that do NOT count as mods.
So you can still add mods to them after that.

Iconic weapons are the same as in witcher 3 - just pieces of trash. For me this loot system is the worst part of the game. I am genuinely mad at game designer who made it.

The iconic weapons all have unique traits which might be useful. For the most part they're also fixed in terms of additional damage elements and the like. So they can be worth upgrading if you really want the unique feature, or if you really want say a weapon that does thermal damage and you don't have the time/components/patience to wait until the RNG spits one up through crafting or looting.
Some weapons cant be crafted (crafted items are your level-1) and then upgrade. This weapon crafting needs original weapon. So you upgrade as long as mat cost is low then craft higher tier (rare->ultra rare->legendary). Check your blueprints. Also some weapon can be put on display in V room. (I think this is only for iconic stuff)
