lace_gardenia: This right here is the important part. No updates means no future security fixes either.

If MS follows the same model for win7 as they did for XP you can pay for continued fixes, to the tune of a couple million.
It is a pity to disappoint you, madam, but I have not installed a single security update for my Windows 7 Ultimate Edition. And everything still works fine.
Maybe because I do not use warez nor visit suspicious pornosites...

FTSO: Windows 7 support is going to end in 14 of january 2020, corporations may receive a period of security support I guess, but the home user must update or live with what´s is the last version of the system.

We are moving to the cloud based systems on a fast step, something is going to change with all that grid of satellites sent to space each year. The Windows XP and 7 are not flexible for mobile and do not have a good design to become fully integrated with the future cloud.

This make me think in a scenario without the need of a storage in our own hardware at some point, like renting a config and just have the keyboard, mouse, screen, joystick, VR, as requirements under some compatibility, brand, whatever the crap. This is going to happen at some point in different ways because some populous cant reach the cloud in the same way globally, neither buy very expensive hardware, where the idea of rent a cloud config may bring fast computing across the nations, see the eula.

Let´s hope politicians dont see an oportunity to bring more illegals across other nations because they are all "brilliant brain surgeons" that can't reach the cloud.

That's fine, I have no interest in putting my stuff on someone else's computer (which is a much more accurate description than "cloud"). Nor do I give a crap about mobile devices. I'm using a computer, not a phone.

In fact, forcibly integrating my devices with someone else's computer sounds like an utterly terrible idea. There's no benefit to me, and it will only cause security problems.

Come Nerevar, friend or traitor, come.
There is no escape, no recall or intervention can work in this place. X)

This is something for the future, not today or tomorrow, but it is going to happen.

Can't wait for a small high-altitude nuclear device to take out the entire low Earth orbit satellite fleet -- In one fell swoop almost all telecommunications gone; and it could very easily happen, even by accident. A slightly larger device or a badly timed solar flare, and there goes the geosynchronous fleet as well. And then we find out who has become too attached to their smart tech to survive the good old-fashioned way...

Losing control of your devices only happens if you let it - if you keep buying and using stuff of which you are not the true owner. All that's required to halt this cloud-ification is for people to not use it.

If you want a different quote to live by, try this one:

Do not go gentle into that good night; rage, rage against the dying of the light.

lace_gardenia: There are some alternatives if one still want/need cloud services:
- pay for the service from someone you trust (enough) not to sell your user data to advertisers
- use the cloud only for less important things things and/or things that you can keep a local backup of (like file storage)
- run your own, personal service using things like Nextcloud. It's def an alternative if you are ok with a bit of server DIY. There are also home/SOHO NAS devices that can run servers as a downloadable package.
We don't know how it's going to be, these alternatives may work on a hypothetical scenario, but who knows how it is going to be in 20 years. If the world doesn't end in a decade, let´s call Greta to bitch about the inquisitive cloud.

Of course there are. I just saying that it's inaction on our side that gives corporations & goverment power to rule us.
The cloud technology itself is nice, it's the inevitable use of this technology for personal gain by corporations that maddens me.
That - and the lazyness of people who thinks "it will all works fine" by "invisible hand of market".

How things are in 20 years is determined very strongly by what you do now. If right now, you blindly hand away control over everything that you have, then in 20 years you will have no control over anything. It's quite simple

This isn't something you fix, it's something you prevent. Don't do it in the first place. Just Say No (to "cloud" things).
Hey, gog or cdpr, I don't really care which.
I have 70$ from now till the 25th ready for preorder game If you give me any of the specs and if you tell me win7 or 10 only.

I personally have to stay on 7 due to ms firing all their qa and pushing qa to beta testers and the inability of them to distinguish features from security, or the ever fun 'we decided to push this and oops most of your drive is now formatted' that happened with symbolically linking, I don't have the money to run a secondary hot backup for when microsoft decided to dick me, but for 2077, I do have the patience to bios disable drives and boot 10 from a stick just for the game but I require to know if its even worth my time or if my hardware isn't even going to make minimum spec, cpu will definately be good enough but gpu... I really don't want to put everything to minimum to run on a 1060 6gb given what minimum looks like.

I agree with you, good point.
