Hello!
I see folks saying this is game is like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi. I believe that's the consensus. I feel like its closer to a few other games than it is to the titles mentioned above. I also recommend you play these games:
Batman, The NES game - amazing platformer. The Genesis version has better graphics and is slightly different, but it feels empty.
Shadow of the Ninja - Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi got the spotlight, and this hidden gem went unnoticed.
Street Fighter 2010 - Cyber Shadow has some of the atmosphere of the game and its story. Especially the parts where you encounter purple goop. CS also has an attack that is straight from this game. You press down attack to shoot fireballs that travel up and diagonally.
