Hello,

I am running Crysis on a machine that has no sound, so I was counting on subtitles.

Unfortunately, the subtitles are not showing in the game at all.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.
So you enabled them in the settings but they don't show up? No idea, they worked here (Win 8.1, Nvidia graphics)
Suggestion: Get some earphones! Does not work if the sound chip is broken though :-(

If your audio chip is not working then get USB sound card ( like Creative X-Fi ) and then headphones.

TRY THIS:

!WARNING! These commands affect ur ingame settings so please set ur in-game settings as u wish BEFORE using this.

Make a new text file called " system.cfg " and other one called " autoexec.cfg ". When saving files choose "other file types" - there can be no "system.cfg.txt" - if that happens you must edit extension so there is just .cfg
In both of these files paste following and save

con_restricted=0
r_DisplayInfo=0
hud_subtitles=1

now copy both files to the main game directory. Thats all.

Quick explanation:
con_restricted=0 - makes u b able to use ALL the console commands

r_DisplayInfo=0 - if u set this one for 1 it will display current FPS + a lot of other stuff - useful when tweaking performance but unwanted when actually playing a game - so set up for 0 ( info disabled )

hud_subtitles=1 - I personally haven't tried this one but it seems it is the option responsible for keeping subtitles ON.

My parents have USB speakers with built-in sound chip. Fairly good except they do not have Linux drivers.

That's like saying someone can't do sign-language unless the audience is capable of hearing. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant!

Are people absolutely, rock-bottom stupid? (rhetorical question)
[not referring to you, but the jaw-dropping developers who thought it was a good idea to disable subtitles if you don't have sound]

Do u even hv sound card in ur computer? Is it enabled or disabled? Broken or not? Im asking because the game cannot check if ur speakers/headphones/whatever is ON or not ( in case u've got working sound card ).

Follow my previous instructions just this time use these commands in those 2 files:

con_restricted=0
r_DisplayInfo=0
s_SoundEnable=1
s_SpeakerConfig=2
hud_subtitles=1

Explenation:
s_SoundEnable=1 - forces audio to be ON in-game
s_SpeakerConfig=2 - sets ur in-game speaker config to stereo

Use this and tell us if it worked :)

WinXp is not compatible with my laptop snd card. BTW, when you say "main game directory" you are referring to "..games/crysis" right? Not "..games/crysis/game" or another? Because I put both files in the directory and upon opening the game and using the console to type "con_restricted" it says it is set to "1". I manually entered "s_soundenable" in the console too and it said it was already "1". :S

I'm sorry, I am running XP for gaming but the sound does not work.

I run Ubuntu too, sound works fine there. The laptop was meant for Vista. Bah.
Alright, I actually ran into the same problem; sound works in Windows XP but not in one game I tried today. I think I will move completely to using Wine instead.

Can you run Crysis in Ubuntu without issues?

Not at home now and only have weak laptops here that are nowhere near able to run Crysis + I only have dvd version of the game. So sorry but cannot help you more but for some links:

According to adamhm the DX9 (there is also a DX10 version that naturally cannot run on Windows XP, no idea about Wine) runs just fine: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_judas_does_this_run_in_wine_thread_v1173/post458

PS. I might look a bit more into why the sound is missing on Windows XP in Knights of Honor. Game is unrelated but problem is same, I guess.
