Does this version play any smoother than the one on steam?

I have major slowdown issues while playing the steam version even though my laptop exceeds the minimum requirements.

I just tried to post a warning on the Cryostasis review page - and for some reason GOG wouldn't let me post it...

If you have an AMD rig, a laptop or a single GPU nVidia rig you should pass this one up...

It's the physx calculations that are causing the performance issues...

I hardly doubt that the GOG version would be so dramatically different than the Steam version (besides no DRM)... They would of had to find some way for users to be able to COMPLETELY turn off the hardware physx features - and the devs who made this game, were unable (most likely unwilling), to release such a patch...

I would not take the risk...

I highly doubt it is any different as the problems with Cryostasis and performance are linked directly to its poorly designed engine which is something GOG cannot really change.

When I originally bought this game in 2009 (the Aspyr disk version, which by the way also has zero DRM--no disk is even required in the drive), my system also exceeded the game's requirements by quite a bit. It ran pretty well, but somewhat sluggish, very sluggish at times.

GOG putting the game up got me curious as to how the game would do on my newest system (Win7, core i7 870, 8 gigs ram, GTX 570), and I am happy to report that I am finally playing it as was intended. I've got everything maxed out at 1920 x 1200, and my framerates range from lows of around 45 fps to highs over 100, mostly holding right around 60. It now runs very smoothly at last, 3 years after I bought it. No patches or anything. Straight out of the box.

I'm enjoying the game much, much more now that it's running right. Maybe this time I will actually finish it.

It's a very good game and I would highly recommend that you try to finish it. It's always been the tech behind this game that's made it less than it could have been. On ATI cards this game works terribly so you are quite lucky you own a Nvidia card.

Yeah, it's too bad they couldn't have spent just a little more time, effort, and money on the engine. The graphics actually look pretty damned good, and they nailed the atmosphere. If they'd have refined the engine to the point where they could have licensed it out, I'd have been happy to buy more games built with it.

Usually, the minimum requirements are just that, the absolute minimum. I also believe the so-called recommended specs for a game are below what is needed to play with everything to the max, if that is what you are after.

I downloaded the demo for this, to see how it would work on my system. After two days of testing, I think I got it. With every video option enabled/set to maximum on my machine, the game seems to run fine when I just move around. Even when fighting dogs, it still runs ok. But it goes into low fps/slow-motion whenever a human opponent enters the scene. The best and only cure to this was to disable the advanced PhysX effects from the video options menu. As far as I observed, the things you will be missing by doing so will be some water flow effects. For example, the water gun shoots a solid, thick stream with PhysX enabled. Without it, it looks like someone is squirting water out of a syringe.

I also changed some physx setings from my nvidia card menu. When asking the CPU, not the GPU, to handle PhysX, I still got the slow-motion effect, athough it did not seem as bad as when the GPU was handling everything. Might be worth investigating, I think.

Ya the tech behind the game is more than capable of producing very good graphics, it's just a terrible engine from a design perspective. Such a shame since it legitimately stops quite a lot of people from playing this game.

I played this about 3 years ago. I have a GTX 260 and a i7 920. I found I had no problem. This is a cut above GoG normal fare, powerwise. But it isn't the graphics card that's as important. Based off people with better vid cards but less power having trouble, I have to believe its ths CPU power that matters.

There's also a nasty bug. I had to use the console to enable walking through walls and flying to get past a clipping error.

I'm trying this out with a dual core 3.2 AMD and Radeon 5670 setup. I took the default install settings which had phys-ex turned on at first. I made my way to a door outside and got inside before dying after a couple tries. Seemed like there was nothing to do there but go downstairs and back outside again so I did. The game seemed to be running okay. I went outside and after some trial and error (more deaths from freezing) I found another door and made my way into that room. Down the stairs I was attacked by a humanoid monster and the frame rate plunged into single digits. Somehow I managed to kill it in slow motion but I wasted all the water gun ammo doing so.

So I went into options and turned off Phys-Ex and wanted to test further to see if that helps or not. Unfortunately, my attempts to back outside and find a third door just result in me freezing to death, multiple times so far.

I am not having too much fun with this freezing to death/trial and error finding doors stuff. :-(

I'm going to try some more because it looks like it could be a very cool game. I have a feeling though my current hardware just isn't going to be able to swing this. I guess we'll see if I can get to another damned monster without freezing to death again!

I'm thinking about buying it, but I really don't want alot of hassle getting this game to work properly.

I have a 6850HD GPU from ATI and a 6-Core Bulldozer engine. Will my rig run this game fine or should I consider spending my money somewhere else?

I'm asking the same question. I have 6870 card with an i5 2500k CPU, how well would this game run on my system?

i tried it and the first minutes gave me a clear message: wait until you get a better pc

For me, it runs totally fine, although i'm getting the green screen glitch right after I'm starting the game. Is there any intro video before the menu?

Otherwise, the game runs smoothly. I have a GT220, and an Intel E5400, plus 3.5 GB RAM.

Or get a dedicated PhysX card, OC your CPU to 3.8-4.5GHZ and run 2 GTX 670's. It's a poorly optimized game that also happens to only use 1 core of your CPU
