Before I begin, let me reiterate that this thread is full of spoilers, and should not be read by people who have not yet beaten the game and enjoy surprises.

That said, I beat the game a short time ago, and I took the liberty of going to the TV Tropes page on the game, as is my custom, to learn more about it and add a few wicks.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Cryostasis

There I learned something interesting; apparently, there are multiple ways to "save" the North Wind.
1. You can go into the past of the 1st Mate, and make him not give the captain the message from HQ.
2. You can go into the past of the engineer, and make him encourage the captain instead of berating him.
3. You can go into the past of the political officer, and make him help the captain instead of the 1st Mate during the attempt to escape from the glacier.

Of these, I got the 2nd one, and I'm wondering what conditions there are to get each ending. Is it random, or is there something I could have done to get one of the others?

Old thread, but I'll answer anyway.

On the last location where you start in Cronos' palm, you can walk off three of his fingers, each making available a different character/ending.

It's that simple? Huh... seems kind of arbitrary, but alright.
