Hi,
mac user (under 10.6.8), I wanted to play the Crusader's games (no Remorse and no Regret) with a gamepad.
Of course, I knew that gamepad support was not "by default".
I use Gamepad Companion, available in the Mac App Store, to map keyboard keys to a Xbox 360 wired controller.
It works, but I keep having a "popup" telling me :
"
The game is not responding to joystick input.
"
It is quite annoying since the mapping works but the game (or Dosbox for what I know), keeps bugging me.
Does anyone know how to disable these messages ?

Thank you in advance,

PN9

I know this isn't a solution to your specific request to suppress that popup, but you might want to try an alternative piece of software. This is called Enjoy and is free.

El Capitan 10.11.2 2015 MacBook Pro:

I just downloaded the Boxer app from the official site (boxerapp dot com) to consult the actual application's help files rather than the Boxer game envelope inline help for my GOG game, also under GamepadCompanion which does it beautifully (Little Big Adventure), but there is that incredibly annoying popup spoiling the whole show.

Those help files STATE that if you are using other software to emulate your game controller (Game Companion actually being the very example given with a link to download it and everything) then you can DISABLE BOXER'S JOYSTICK EMULATION by pressing CMD-I during play and making some appropriate selections.

My computer just dings a no at me though.

So I looked at the Inline help a bit closer and the only help on getting your joystick working with games are for those that were written to do so in the first place, no mention of other softwares etc in there...

Each game has it's own copy of Boxer enveloping it but for some reason it seems that games that were never designed to work with joysticks have their envelope's locked to emulate joystick support despite being incapable to provide it and interfering with a very valid (more so I think) Key Mapping solution which otherwise would have worked perfectly. Especially for DOS based games.

I'm guessing that for some reason CMD-I, whilst I imagine it to be present, has been disabled in the GOG implementations??...

I'm going to read the proper help more and see but I am fumbling in the dark and hold little hope but I'll post back if I get it working this time.

I don't understand.

[edit(minutes later):unless, silly boy, it was made with an older version of Boxer and CMD-I is the solution they provided to this very problem, makes more sense doesn't it - guess I'll have to put up with the stoopid popup!]

All GOG Mac DOS games are packaged with Boxer standalone. Boxer standalone lacks the UI bits for joysticks/controllers, swap CDs, etc. It also seems to lack some of the actual code from standard Boxer to even use some of them. You can likely copy the .boxer out of the GOG .app and run it as is in the full version of Boxer.
Alternatively, if Boxer standalone sees your joystick you might be able to get away with editing some of the config files to enable this.

You have solved this as much as it will solve for me, message gone, now thought CTRL ARROW KEYS is governed by the OS so doing El Capitan stuff instead of managing my character, but I also mapped different character states to the hat (joypad arrowkeys, think they are called something like that) so am getting used to doing it that way :o)

Love the losing the envelope suggestion...

From Finder\Documents I select FinderMenu\Go\EnclosingFolder
here we find DosGames which upon exploring turns out to be where Standard Boxer stores it's Games Library.
Finder\OpenNewWindow\Applications find my GOG DOS game\ctrl-click\ShowPackageContents
There is the Boxer file LittleBigAdventure.Boxer CTRL-Click it\COPY
CTRL-Click in DosGamesFinderWindow\Paste
DoubleClick DosGames\LittleBigAdventure.Boxer:
PLEASE SELECT A PROGRAM TO RUN...

(darn it... okay, mainly batch files, mainly bxlaunch_*.bat, e, es, g, f, i - gonna take a leap here and say launch_e.bat will run an English version, cross fingers...)

IT WORKS!!!

Am sure the Batch file could be included in the conf file under autoexec.bat eg:
CALL LAUNCH_E.BAT

But quite honestly I don't mind just clicking on it now I know it works.

Also [just tested as alternate to postulating] GOGGame.Boxer\ShowPackageContents\C.harddisk\CTRL-Click(bxlaunch_e.bat)\OpenWith\TextEdit WORKS so in similar circumstances one could do process of elimination to figure out what they are wanting. Wouldn't have mattered in my case [I *get* what it is doing but...] but, just to say it works as an option. :o)

Pity about CTRL-ARROWS (and Lord knows what else obviously unfortunately) but your solution has done me proud. The Slightly spoilt controls is nothing compared to that annoying message box.

Thank you Gydion, happy life to you Sir, Laters... :o)

Does this not still work?
