Hi guys,
I'm stuck in mission 1, where you go up a level with a lift into a room with a thrasher cannon that, well, thrashes you. Though I could control the cannon with a computer nearby, I couldn't find any way to disable it until i watched a play-through on YouTube, where the guy playing just blew it up while in control of it, but I can't see HOW he did it - can anyone tell me?

Dunno. Got any spider bombs? Those are about the easiest way to take one out. Also, when you shoot it, do you see a blue bit of crackling (force field)? If so, you'll need to take out the shield generator before you can destroy it.

The cannon stops rotating the moment the elevator doors open. Just run through the room before it shoots.

Use a rocket launcher to kill it quickly.

Yep rocket launcher/grenade launcher will take out a thresher cannon in just 1-2 shots (provided it's not shielded). If you have to take out one before you get those weapons you'll need to hit it with quite a bit of small-arms fire before it blows. Take advantage of the fact that the thresher cannons rotate rather than tracking you, and they'll only fire when they're actually pointing at you. Get a few shots in, then if the cannon gets close to pointing at you roll in the opposite direction of the way it's turning to dodge its shot, then resume fire. Repeat this process until the cannon is destroyed.
