So the default controls are not so good but would using a controller be better (or even possible) than remapping keys?
And even then does anyone know what a good keyboard control scheme would be?

If you have a remapable keyboard like the Logitech G13 you could just map the keys to that for left hand and then use the right hand for movement on keyboard or with the mouse. It's what I do.
