Been thinking about buying ... Cossacks Anthology

According to what I've read about Cossacks Anthology here on GOG and elsewhere, the game has issues with win7+.
There is a problem with the mouse cursor freezing. There is a problem with "direct draw" that causes the game to crash during installation, or after. The game will freeze up randomly. There are other problems and the common denominator seems to be - Windows 7 64 bit. The overall consensus seems to be - Do not buy this game if you are using Windows 7 64, because it will not work. I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Lets get to the bottom of this ... Who wants to buy a game (old favorite) that just doesn't work?

Is this game a write off with Win7 64b?
What are the issues and can they be fixed?
Are the problems being addressed?

GOG's version works out of the box on Windows 7 64bit but I also got my discs to work after A LOT of tweaking. The games are great, buy them if you are into that kind of games.

Hi Themken and Thank You for the quick reply.

I was just reading the comments & reviews on the CA game page. There are
many positive, some negative and quite a few mixed reviews on CA. I think
that is normal for most games though. I did see some complaints about the
game not working properly under Win7 64.

I kinda like these type of games, but I've never been particularly good at them.
I'm a huge fan of Total Annihilation. I think it was the best rts ever. Efforts to
reproduce the game play and atmosphere that cavedog sewed into that game
(imho) have failed.

One person who complained about the games not working has since never had any problems with them, I know since I know them in real life.

The gameplay was tweaked after European Wars. I think the only reasons to play C --EW is the campaign. The Art of War and Back to War are really nice also for skirmishes and custom maps too.

It works fine here with Windows 10 x64. It also worked normally while I still had Win 7 x64.

I have also tested the game on Linux Mint 18 with PlayOnLinux and am happy to report the game also worked.

A brilliant strategy game, although it's a bit of a "rough diamond". Very difficult too. It only gets properly fun once you get the hang of it a bit.

Some people love it, some don't. It's not too casual, and requires a lot of micromanagment to win some of the more difficult missions. It also features terrain that affects "physics" of the cannons and rifles, which I always loved about the game, considering it's so old and in 2D.

Thanks .. Pieces, that is good to know.

I think my favorite old game of all time is Total Anilation. I've heard that Supreme Commander is pretty good if you are willing to read a text book of info for each unit. Long story short - To much of a good thing. To many huge changes taken to the extreme.

I actually enjoy the old computer game RISK II .. orignally a board game. There is a newer version out, but it just doesn't cut it as far as I'm concerned. It is hard to keep it working in any MS OS after XP. I have the Microproes CD and it doesn't work in W7/64. I got another version (barely) working by deepred.

I have Risk 2 as well and I got it working but forgot how.

Just to make things clear. Copied this from the game card: Cossacks Anthology includes: Cossacks: European Wars, Cossacks: The Art of War, and Cossacks: Back to War.

Should you ever remember how you got the Risk II CD working, please let me know. :)

I'm off to the TA forum.

Knowing it is possible is halfway to a solution. Sorry but the game and the computer it is on are not in the same location as me right now so cannot check now.

Enable chat with everyone or add me as a temporary friend to enable chatting with me, please. I am now playing Risk 2.
No need of course if you already got it working.

Only thing I seem to have done is make sure I installed it outside the program folder. NO compatibility settings or anything. Of course, I have installed DirectX9 as DX-whatever-is-the-latest does not come with DX9 support.

We can also open a thread in the general discussion subforum and talk Risk 2 there. In the Cossacks subforum it does not belong.

Hi Themken, I played around with it and got it working. Uninstalled it with Revouninstaller, ran cleanup tool, cleaned the registry and rebooted. Reinstalled to different folder and it works.

Last couple of days I have been messing with another game. I'll see if chat with anyone / everyone is turned on. I'll add you as friend. See my post in about SS2.

G..
Definitely buy, it's awesome!
