Played 30 minutes, game freezes (have to force quit; "save game" spinning icon just stays spinning). Play 10 more minutes, crash to desktop, and then again 15 minutes later. Once when interacting with a collectible, once when cleansing a control point, once in the middle of walking through a hall.

Apparently this is a common problem on the Steam version as well (plenty of discussion about it in the Steam forums). Consistently happens to people with a variety of different hardware and settings, and it is pretty obviously a problem with the game.

Any idea if/when this is going to get fixed? The game is unplayable like this, and considering how many people on Steam are having this problem, it seems pretty likely I'm not the only person on GoG with this problem.
"the program has stopped working", C++ runtime errors, "device disconnected"... The messages vary, but similar to you, I'm getting thrown out of the game every 15 minutes or so.

The game also lags a bit whenever I open or close my map. It's all quite irritating.
Have you both tried disabling the GOG overlay if using galaxy? That seems to be the flavor of the week with a host of issues.

I played it on the Epic store, and that one has no overlay (at least when I played it), so none of those issues happened. Steam has an overlay and seems to be the common denominator.
The device disconnected error is related to an issue the game has in running in DX12 mode. In the game's directory, there is a DX11 version, use that one to launch the game instead. It is apparently far more stable.

I disabled the overlay a long time ago :) so that's not it.
I did submit a bug report to 505Games's site. I also tried visiting their support page, but sadly "this page no longer exists." Notably there is no option to indicate that you have the GoG version, only Steam or Epic. So I don't feel too confident...
My crash problem was without any message, simply the whole pc shut off (probably gpu overheated, although it is very unlikely). After that I couldn't start the game. I could get into menu screen, but selecting "Continue" would freeze the loading screen (Polaris image) and immediately throw me off to desktop without no message. It seemed like a corrupt save problem... and ultimately it was.

As per GOG general recommendations' page (lookup "gog crashing in general") and some posts on reddit, I have tried installing newest Nvidia drivers, rolling back to older ones, reinstalling DirectX, reinstalling VC redistributables, validating game files, completely reinstalling the game. Nothing helped.

The worst part, my corrupt saves found their way into GOG Cloud backup, I think during the first unsuccessful trial to Continue the game. So I had to copy end of chapter/main mission saves (for me it was end of chapter 6) and rename them in to slot0. I had to repeat some side missions missions, but that was fine, because its a great game.

So, if you are facing the same crash on "Continue" without any warnings, probably the only way to make it work is to use some older saves for slot0, which stores your current progress in between the main missions.

Oh, and the most important take away from all of this - make your own backups if you don't want to lose a lot of progress.

I haven't purchased the GOG version and am reluctant to since I have both Epic and Steam versions that continue to give random CTD. As mentioned above it has happened when collecting a new item/upgrade, entering a new area, after autosave, after fast travel, after FMV cutscene, open/closing menu, examining an item in inventory, sometimes even in the middle of a fight. I also once had the whole PC shutdown immediately which I thought was a power outage, turned out my power supply was blown.

After submitting support tickets on both Remedy and 505's sites, and asking for help in the 505 Discord, I have gotten only one helpful suggestion (even though it never stopped the problem permanently). This was the solution to delete the ini, apparently some people were getting configs that were incorrect and causing problems.
My issue seems different because I can absolutely not get the game to run with any consistency even using the default settings. Hope there is a fix at some point, otherwise I'll have to wait for a new system to re-install the game with fingers crossed...
I was reminded I'd posted this when I saw Control among the games on sale in the store.

I just refunded the game and used the money to buy something else that isn't a buggy mess. It's crazy that these people release a game like this and don't fix it - even more so, considering that the Steam version has the same problems! Fortunately, GoG is great about refunds and I had no problem there. (Thanks, GoG.)

I thought Alan Wake was a heavily mediocre game and never understood the hype. But at least it *ran*. I'm not buying a game from 505 again after this. What a mess.
for me it helped to use borderless mode instead of fullscreen mode.
but now i have the problem that the game crashes everytime at the anchor boss fight :-(
I'm wondering if they are going to address this crashing issue! can't get passed the first control point in the director override mission
The only crash that I ever experienced in Control was with the Anchor Boss. It occurs 100% of the time, and has left me with the sourest taste I had to uninstall it. I'm not using a one-shot cheat just to get past something to avoid crashing.
Up until that point I had no problems at all.
I have not had any crashes other than when I set the graphics to maximum, it caused my gpu to hard crash and my pc completely restarted. The only other game that's happened with, funny enough, is Witcher 3, and in both cases Galaxy was in use along with its overlay.
