Hi folks.
This game was hard 12 years ago, and still is today.
Any tips, any advice to help me play more than 1 hour and still have money ?
Thx in advance.
When you build a house, and move some tenants in, don't forget to tell them to make babies!
Click the house, then in the top- :edit: left :end-edit: is 3 clickyable buttons : Business man, baby, dollar sign. In that area, is the "clock" that tells you the time left until completion. Babies get you more tenants for further houses. When they've popped out 2 or 3, then click on the money to collect rent, or the business man to make a worker for building gangs.
Build at least one of each type of the three starting houses to unlock the Cement Yard, which will then give you access to better buildings : Factory for house items, better homes etc.
Try to fill each plot of land with buildings : Some missions from the council will tell you to do this within a small amount of time and game over if you fail.
Edit : Wrong part of screen told for babies, workers or collect rent. corrected now.

I haven't got round to buying this yet, but from what I remember - the computer is a bit too good. I found I needed to stunt his growth a little bit. I did this by sending my construction workers over to his plot when he starts out, and just delaying the construction of his buildings. After getting myself into a position that I felt allowed me to compete, I let him loose.
This game is fantastic! Childhood memories from this one..
..but after getting sacked three times with no progess - how in the world do i force 'enemy' tenants to move out? At the point the mission comes, I don't have a lot to work with - hippy, thief, big strong guys, gangster and mr. fixit.
Haven't been able to off the tenant either, because they move so fast.
Nevermind, I figured it out. Make your foreman do your bidding on their little fences!
Help! There is a hippy picketing my lumber yard, how do I get ride of the rascal?

Just like IRL - you simply gather a mob and beat the crap out of him ;P.
Either that or use gangsters.
I bought the game now, and have played it through. Here's my getting started tips:
At the start of the game, straight away send your 2 foremen out somewhere, leaving 2 workers who aren't in a work gang in your HQ. Grab these guys quickly, and march them over to the enemy plot. Before the computer has completed either of his 2 buildings, stand a worker on each plot. The computer cannot build while one of your workers is "squatting" on his worksite. The buildings will eventually blow up from not being built, by which point you can either send more workers to squat, or consider that a sufficient head start.
Meanwhile, buy the plot right next to you, put a lumber mill on it. Then put level 1 houses around your HQ (make sure you build one of each). I found I could fit 2 horizontal next to my HQ, 3 along the top, and 1 more down the side. You may need to delay building them all at once because you'll run out of level 1 tenants, but as long as you get the 3 different types of houses built then you'll be able to build the cement works and Gadget factory.
Housing Tip: Give them a reasonable garden, for level 1 tenants it doesn't need to be too big, but they like to have a couple of trees, and it helps make sure you've got good land usage for a reasonable cost. Once the level of house goes up then you'll need to scale up the gardens, as they'll start wanting garden features like sheds and garden furniture.
I would recommend building the cement works next to your lumber mill, perhaps the gadget factory as well, just make sure you can fit a level 1 house in there too. This should limit the amount of double glazing you need to provide to being just 1 house. You should by now be using 1 of your crews to switch between lumber, cement and gadgets, while the other one buids.
From here on out it's quite easy. take the time to beat your enemy down, while you set up a few level 2 houses, and just use these for rent. Pump out workers from your level 1 tenants (upgrade the bedrooms to keep them producing, but not their kitchens, so that they die sooner and you can put in fresh baby making machines.), then use the workers as soldiers to restrict the enemy. I think it's at level 3 that the council hits you with its first really hard mission where you have to build a park off in some remote corner, so make sure when you're getting a fair bit of rent in before this point. Then get a couple of well trained gangsters and you're unbeatable.
Best of luck with it (and best of fun).
If you're hardcore enough to make it till you get level 3 and upwards tenants for the love of something loveable DO NOT MOVE THEM INTO THEIR HOUSES UNTIL THEIR GARDENS ARE FULLY KITTED OUT. EQUALLY.
Why do I say this?
Because if you move two tenants next door to each other and start buying them garden equipment (gnomes, wells, greenhouses etc...) you'll get complaints. "The Jones' next door keep buying things for their garden, why don't you ever buy me anything!"
The only way out of this is to evict them, blow the house up etc...
Prevention of this is MUCH better than the cure, trust me on this!
So I can see from the previous posts that the bedroom makes babies faster (doh) and the kitchen makes the tenants live longer. But what does the bathroom and the lounge do when upgraded? and is it adviceable to upgrade them multiple times compared to the cost ?
Its been alooong time since I've played this game, but its still awesome!

The lounge makes them less likely to complain, the bathroom reduces the rate at which the building decays and needs repairing.
There is usually a question mark icon near all the upgrades and buildings. This contains some really useful / essential information.
As far as is it worth maxing out the upgrades - I would say yes. Upgrades are quite cheap compared to the benefits they convey.

Then again - why would I want the Slobs to live longer when they're not pumping out workers ? Hell - I want them to DIE. As such - I max the bedroom ASAP, improve the bathroom second, mess with the lounge when necessary... and leave the kitchen at the lowest level at all cost.
Prolonging the existence of the rent-paying members of the community is an entirely different matter :>...

Agreed, I said that above - I was referring to the question of do you max out the upgrade compared to just upgrading it once.
I find a handy tip for the early stages of the game is when you need a quick crop of level 2 tenants that you grab a pair of slobs, push them into a house with an upgraded bedroom and kitchen, so as to improve their lifespan (longer life = more babies!) and reproduction.
Repeat this step for punks giving birth to level 3 kids.

Nah. They reproduce FAR better early on, so the shorter their life, the sooner you'll be able to replace them with fresh Slobs...
