Try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then exiting the screen that comes up. I had a similar problem with The Sims: CC wherein even playing windowed would make a black box in the middle of the screen that stayed on top of every other window, and that's how I solved that problem. If not, try playing windowed; right click on the shortcut (if you start the game by clicking the exe, make a shortcut and then do this) and go to properties, and at the end of the "Target" field, add "-w" without quotes. Hope that works
