So aside from talking him into a trap to get captured, or outright killing him, is there a way to just negotiate with him? The only opportunity I saw was telling him who I really was, but I feel like that would just trigger a gunfight.

I would try, but the game is really unstable when loading the game and seems to enjoy crashing/corrupting my files from time to time.
