This game seems to be an exercise in how many hours you have to devote into figuring out how the hell you're supposed to get across that friggin map without the sniper seeing you until you go insane. The missions in this game are BRUTALLY hard. Perhaps it's my lack of tactical sense, but the interface for this game is just bizzare. Worse, you're looking for the ONE way the designers programmed in to finish a certain level, in almost all cases. You will need to abuse savegames HEAVILY in order to survive.
Combat? Useless. Your guys cannot fight well enough to do anything. I mean, I know you're outnumbered, but I'm a frigging SAS commando. I should be able to kill more than three germans in a firefight, especially when I have the surprise advantage.
The worst part is is that the game had a lot of potential. I had fun... at least on the tutorial. Why couldn't you give me an introductory difficulty, one that lets you screw up a few times without death? More importantly, why the hell is the control system so BUTCHERED? Could you not have thought up an easier way?
I hate to see wasted potential. Worse, I hate to come out and bash on a game everyone seems to enjoy, but it just doesn't seem to be made for me. I don't like wrestling with bad controls and I like having some leeway as I get used to the game.
I'll happily ignore the fact that this post is more than a year old and say this: What people don't quite seem to get is that Commandos (especially the first one and its standalone addon) is basically a puzzle game using a WW2 setting. It's not supposed to simulate real operations, it's a very abstract logical game that uses the scenario to be more appealing. However, often the fact that you're controlling soldiers will provide you with several solutions for a problem, making the game quite friendly in comparison to real puzzle games but leave players who expect a tactical combat game frustrated.
Then I'll happily ignore your reply is a year old to say that it's a really interesting insight on this game. Made me think on those times I used to play it, switching with a friend on every dead; and you're right. Maybe one of the reasons I didn't like the rest of the series so much. I mean, a dozen sniper rifle shots and grenades? More on coffers within the scenario? Ok, it's realistic, but makes things so easy...
Again happily ignoring the space of the year -

But the original post seems to refer solely to Commandos 3. Having to all intents and purposes "grown up" with the first two games, I played the third one for the first time tonight, just to see what it was like.

And they've ruined the controls and forced a fast-paced action game atop an engine designed for deep thought, meticulous planning and a fixed viewpoint. It doesn't work at all, and the already supremely high difficulty setting is raised further because of the frankly ridiculous controls.

For fans of the series, Commandos 3 is a bad game. For newcomers, Commandos 3 is an unplayable game.

Even though it's been three years, I do hope that the original poster will realise this and instead try the first title (which is extremely difficult but charming, logical and engaging) or the second game (which is just perfect in most every way).

In fact, play Commandos 2. It's just about the only Commandos game you need.

I give 1 and 2 a toss up. I used to think 2 was hands down the best but after several years of just that I went back to #1 and it definitely has it's advantages, namely number of missions and lack of a story makes it a little easier just to pick up and play. Also with #1 when you finish off a bad guy you don't have to worry about the asshole getting free and coming back only this time with friends.

3 sucks. :D
