Hello! I bought the game today, along with its expansion pack an the two sequels. It was my first serious PC game that I played all the way back when it came out in 1998, when I was a wee lad of 11. Since it is so notoriously difficult I have never completed it...but when I saw it on sale I just couldn't pass the opportunity (and a DRM free one at that!) and re-purchased it - I still have my original disc, but wanted to have the game run disc-free.
I downloaded the setup file and completed the installation, and was all ready to be transported back to occupied Norway, when the game crashed back to Windows after the introductory movie, with the standard error message. I didn't even make it to the menu. What can be done to make the game run properly? I browsed this forum and the web and tried several solutions - none work so far. What I did:
- I looked into the settings of my ffdshow video coded and found out that Cinepak was disabled; I uninstalled the codec pack and tried another one (XP codec pack), but the game still crashed back to Windows. Uninstalled that one and installed the latest K-Lite pack (settings of ffdshow with cinepak disabled) - still goes back to Windows after I watch the intro movie, or skip it. I used the disable option in ffdshow to not run it with Commandos: BEL, but to no result.
- My desktop is 16bit,and I tried changing the resolution to 1084 x 768 - no effect.
- I downloaded the Commandos elite started program, which finally booted up the game - but in a very small window, which makes it essentially unplayable (switching the resolution doesn't work well there).
- I tried compatibility mode with Windows 95, running it in 648 x 480, etc - still nothing.
Good sirs, what is to be done? I was so looking forward to playing this gem again and still do. The expansion pack, Beyond The Call of Duty, runs fine and without any problems. I am using Windows XP with Service Pack 3, on a Dual-Core Pentium 2,70GHZ with 2GB of RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 4800.
PS. Does anyone have any experience with the Steam version of the game? The Steam users complained a lot about it and actually said that the GOG one is superior when it comes to stability, etc (and obviously has no DRM), and have the same problem that I do - which led me to buy it here at GOG in the first place (apart from local patriotism of course). I'd appreciate any responses and help with solving this problem. Cheers!
