Hello,

I've just bought CMBO and couldn't get it to run properly on my modern Win10 gaming rig : it was seriously lagging and stuttering.

However I've just found a fix that makes it work perfectly : DDrawCompat https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat.

Just unzip ddraw.dll in your CMBO folder, no need for XP compability mode or whatever. Please tell me how it fares for you !

Another option is dgVoodoo2. Game runs smoothly and you can also add antialiasing.
When I first load a mission it is insanely laggy but by pressing Esc so it switchs to desktop and then going back into the game the lag always dissapears.

Thanks Corpuscle!

This fix works great on my CMBB install (same engine). The dgVoodoo (Direct 3D) version also works well.

Edit: A later version (of DDrawCompat) also fixes the fog, for Nvidia and Intel HD graphics too. ;)

Thank you, this worked here in in Windows 8.1 as well, as I was facing that same issue.
Fantastic!

My initial elation at picking up the GOG version of CMBO had the air let out of it by the absence of fog in scenarios.

Just installed ddraw.dll per instructions upthread and it works like a charm.

Couldn't be happier right now. Thanks all!
Works like a charm!!!!
Tried both of the suggested files to fix this problem I started to get in the last couple of months: Every time I go out from the game to windows or if I press ESC then the game freezes and the pop up screen that one normaly should get by pressin ESC doesnt appear either, have to use task manager to close the game after that.

Downloaded ddraw.dll folder and placed it in combat mission games files: DDrawCompat-master is located right above the icons folder in the game files, and I also tried: dgVoodoo2: placed the file from it: D3DCompiler_43.dll in the game files but no effect either.

Sigh :/

As of 7/16/2019 GoG remastered the all 3 games to play on Win 10 the only bad part is you have to rebuy them but look at it his way your supporting GoG and their great work :)

What the hell are you talking about? They didn't "remaster" anything & you don't have to rebuy things you already purchased. Where are you getting these ridiculous ideas from?!?

What happened was that GOG replaced their versions that they previously had, with the "official" W10 fixed ones that Battlefront.com (the creators of Combat Mission) were selling previously as an upgrade for $5 on their website.
I don't think the esc solution had anything to do with the game itself but rather Win10. I used to get the same benefit by alt+tabbing out and back in again. don't have to do that any more. The ddraw (both the original github and now the GOG/Battlefront one) is great for Win10 and intel graphics, but virtually a game-breaking disaster for both nvidia & radeon in Win7. In Win7 that new ddraw file (it's not in the original CD copy of these games) gives you about 20fps with (whether it's a foggy game or not) - and radeon doesn't need it anyway. And neither nvidia nor radeon need that new wrapper (which isn't in the original games's CDs) for limited adjusting of AA and so on as their own graphics cards settings can do far more.

So for my win10 netbook I include the ddraw file (but don't use the wrapper), for my Win7 radeon I throw both new files away and just use radeon settings. For my Win7 nvidia I've thrown both files out and live without fog but at least can apply sparse grid supersampling and have a really beautiful looking in-game view (that I gould never get back with XP without CTDs).
