Does it work on Linux systems (with Wine for example)? I can't get it to work with Wine on Lubuntu, I might try my luck with Proton but usually Wine was enough.

"I can now confirm it runs well with proton experimental, no bugs or glitches so far."

"+1, runs perfectly on Proton out of the box, ultra settings. Some stutters when looking around while zoomed out a lot but nothing too bad."

Is proton even available for GOG players?

Yes. Proton is just WINE with Valve's additions. It's an open source project. Install it in a separate prefix and you're good to go. I don't know if there are any pre-built packages, so perhaps managing it via Lutris would be the most convenient way. This would enable you to easily try different WINE distributions.
