* Disclaimer: The issue I am referring to in this post was an issue that plagued the original releases of Sid Meier's Colonization. Maybe GOG was aware of this issue and fixed it themselves, I cannot say as I haven't downloaded their latest release and tried it myself. That being said, in the eventuality they weren't aware of this issue, here's a word of warning for you fellow Colonization players.

I played a whole lot of Colonization in my youth, which I played in French, and the game is notorious for crashing when you play it in that language, because of the letters with accents (é ê ç è à ù etc), these crashes typically happens when European leaders attempt to talk with you (when you first meet them or sometimes at random during their turn.)

If you decide to play the game in French (I cannot comment for Italian, German or Spanish as I have no experience with these), remember the old adventure games motto: Save early, save often (and save on different slots too). Alternatively, for years my personal solution to that issue was to edit all of the game files referring to the in-game strings of text and colony names to replace the letters with accents and other strange characters with ordinary letters. I recall editing these on my own, but there could also be a fan patch out there that fixes this issue.

Happy colonizing!
