Today I started to play gog's version of the game, but during loading service area it just paused itself for eternity. :) After restart I was trying many possible solutions - running program on one CPU core, playing with minimum graphic options etc. I even founded really strange solution in Codemasters Support:
http://www.codemasters.co.uk/support/faqs.php?gameid=1548&territory=EnglishUK
But uninstalling Nero (sic!) didn't helped at all. I even turned off all virtual drives and other CD/DVD related programs. ;) Finally solution turned out to be really simple - turning ON Vsync in game options. Now everything works perfectly!
I will write here "symptoms" of this problem - if You have one of these, just try above-mentioned solution (or Codemasters one :)):
- game stops or crashes during loadings (before service area or before rally)
- if You will be lucky enough to make it run (it will crash during one of the next loadings anyway), animation of car during service area and heads of guys in the car just before rally with move really fast
- sometimes GPU will tell You it must rest a little (error message)

Many thanks for this advice. I had similar issues but not as severe crashing as you were experiencing. I had the fast moving car rotation screens and the fast head bobbing of the guys in the car, and some menus moved way too fast (the scoreboards after races). I also had a GPU crash but only once.
Another thing this fixed, which is more than likely due to my GPU, is that my graphics card was making whining high pitched noises a lot. I've heard it do this before but not to the extent that this game was making it whine. I've read up on it and it's normal for some of the high-end nvidia cards. Switching v-sync on, though, stopped this completely.
My opinion is that the GPU was running it too quickly with v-sync off, and that was causing the issues.
Anyway, many thanks again. :)
No problem, I'm glad I could help. :) I have ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2, so I think maybe these two cores have something to do with it. At first it was working really fast as well.
