Its been years since I played through the game... But I seem to recall there being reflective floors in those rooms with the checkered tiled floors (similar to what you see in the Unreal 1 title screen flyover)... Only if you were using glide based video card....

It seems that in GOG version that the floor reflections aren't functioning right...? Anyone play this on actual hardware with 3DFX to test it out?
