doomdoom11: I have to agree with Fenixp...this game is way overrated. Blood destroys this in terms of gameplay, sound, and atmosphere. From what I've played the level design doesn't seem all that good either in comparison. Furthermore, the guy takes his sweet time when reloading the gun...uugh. Atmosphere and story can't save this game for me.
Fenixp: I wouldn't go as far as that. Level design ... Well, blood was a horror parody, they did have quite a bit more to work with - for what it is, Undying's level design is pretty cool, still sufficiently open and maze-like, but linear enough to allow for some neat story bits. And the game just looks gorgeous, yeah, yeah, dated engine and all that, but what they did with what they've had is utterly amazing, I especially like behavior of cloth like curtains and that kind of stuff, that's just amazing.
And weapons are ... Some are run-of-the-mill, some are pretty darn cool. Revolver sucks, it sounds like a pea shooter, it acts like a pea shooter, but I love mr. Shotty, and spells are pretty damn well executed as well - they tend to have interesting side-effects, they're quite fun to use
Oh and sound assets are amazing, I mean come on!
It's just ... That this FPS kinda sucks at being an FPS.
Yup, there's tons of stuff they did with Unreal Engine 1 that must've been jaw dropping back then, and still makes me pause today (I love the little details). The bloody footsteps created when you walk into pools of blood; the faux-curtain physics; lots of nice turn of the century portraits on walls (and of course, the gimmick of seeing their hellish side); a few decent scripted scares (I actually wanted more and expected a haunted house); powers and weapons that are interesting in concept but a pain to use.
For example, Tibetan War Canon? The dragon thing that breathes ice and occasionally makes you jump by sneezing? You would *think* that the thing does splash damage, but it really doesn't. You need direct hits for that thing. It's awful. And the journal is a neat idea, but again, its messy and is mixed up with new powers you gain. It's kind of a tease, really; the game is built on Unreal Engine and even has "huh, huh, huh!" jumping sounds, but its not a DM focused shooter. It's more of a survival horror. The game throws so many enemies at you, its often better to just run. Painkiller did the whole Gothic horror shooter better.
