Whenever I launch the game, it defaults to the 3DFX renderer, and I am unable to hear either music or sounds. When I attempt to switch the renderer to Direct3D, I receive the following error message: 3D Hardware Initialization Failed. I have attempted editing the system and user .ini files to no avail. Help meeee!!!!!

Hello there!

Would be helpful if you'd post your computer stats. What kind of operating system are you using at the moment?
This is important because "Undying" normally should work flawless on Windows and Linux without any great problems.

I've just installed this in a clear Wineprefix on Ubuntu: Working so far without problems!
Did you installed DirectX correct?
Or perhabs a library is broken, so you should update your version of DirectX?

Best regards.
Found a solution.

The problem is with the Galaxy Sound System the game runs on.
"Deus Ex" had the same problem but a solution was found:

SImply follow the solution listed here, but substitue the Undying system text file found in the...surprise...System folder in the Undying game folder. worked fine.
I also changed the 3d Rendered from 3dfx To Direct 3d,not sure if this changes much since the issue was with the sound system.
Hope this helps.
When I saw the GPF message concerning the Galaxy system, and knowing the two games came out at roughtly the same time, I decided to give the Deus Ex solution a shot.
If you really wanna choose the D3D renderer, try using it only in 16bit. The hardware initilization failure should disappear. I've read some time ago that modern NVIDA cards or drivers had problems with the 32bit mode. The advanateg of nglide is, that it's working fine and renderes everything in 32bit regardless of the ingame settings.

GOofed around and once you make the changes I posted about to the Undying system file, the game works with both the D3d and 3dFX settings. It is just a problem with the sound system, which can be fixed by changing the system file.

Thank you for this. This solved the crackling sound problem for me. I referenced your post in the Crackling Sound thread.

Thank you for this fix, however the link appears not to be working anymore, at least for me :( Is this still an active link?
Although keep in mind that Direct3D also loses a bit of the ambiance, special affects, lighting, etc.

The game was designed for 3DFX in mind.
