Has anyone else found soldiers cause problems for their city? Every time I have casualties, it seems farmers get drafted off into the Army. And if that happens during planting or harvest season, it can take another year or two to recover from the loss of income. I've seen nobles ruined because of a bad harvest when their workers disappear. And I can't help them without making the other nobles even wealthier.

Any suggestions on how to keep my population more steady and less prone to drastic movements? Aside from the obvious 'Stop losing battles.'

Always have more villagers or farmers than you actually need. Farmers will always try to advance to higher social classes and will move up when given the opportunity. To make sure your farmers reproduce and make new families which raises your overall population, always keep surpluses of food, as kids will not move out of their parents houses to make new households without a surplus of food for their marriages. Also, Walls, use walls to bottleneck invaders who will always try to get to your nobles first. Helpful?
Quite, thank you. The ability to hire mercs would simplify my military problems. On the plus side, it is an incentive not to treat my soldiers as overly expendable.
