In case anyone is wondering, I asked if the Help menu could be fixed because the menu option doesn't work. I got this reply from GOG...

Hello

The help menu doesn't work on newer systems and was removed.
Sorry if this is an inconvenience.

Regards
GOG.com Support

Chaos Overlord's in-game help was created with an old help system that probably originated with Windows 3.0. The help file is in the \HELP folder and is called Chaos.hlp. Microsoft discontinued support of the .HLP help files a long time ago. Unfortunately, while .HLP still works in Windows XP, it is no longer supported in Vista and beyond. So GOG just "neutered" it. Since GOG doesn't have access to the source code, they probably can't remove the Help menu from the menubar, so it just sits there lifelessly.

If you have Windows XP you can create a shortcut to this file and launch it separately if you need to read it while playing the game.

The good news is... Microsoft has a download that should restore this feature to all versions of Windows through Windows 8! Try this article. So you should still be able to read the file OUTSIDE the game (since GOG disabled it in-game).

Maybe they can test this download and in the future include it with Chaos AND restore the Help files?

Well, at least there's an explanation for it. Thanks for sharing that info.
Excellent, thank you.

You should email Support about this.

I did. They said it was not an option. :(

But that shouldn't stop us from downloading the utility from MS so you can view the (still-included) Chaos.hlp file.

Thanks. It works. Since GOG's version only works in fullscreen mode, you will not see the new window for the help system apearing. However, you can easily alt-tab and launch the help file. It works nicely.

On the other hand, the manual is very complete and comprehensive, with some concept art that is worth checking. It includes all the math of the game. But since the version in GOG is a scanned one, if you are in a doubt and want to search for a very specifi doubt, the help file might come in handy.

GOG should have pointed this out, even if they do not want to include the (very small) help system instalation files in their packaged. Why? because GOG poinst out mods quite often, which are not supported by any official instance at all. Then, why not point out the files from Microsoft and leave to the customer the option of installing it or not.

So, again, thanks for raising this issue and for providing a solution.
