One of the top reviews for this mention that the building animations do not work in the GOG version, however, that review is now pretty old. Are they still borked, or is this issue now fixed?

Building animations work perfectly fine, but there is still a bug that they stop working after your computer has been turned on (or sleeping) for several weeks. Restarting your computer will fix it if you ever encounter it. Or use Julius.

This. Julius provides a perfect vanilla-like experience, but tuned to modern hardware and software.

Like with devilutionX for Diablo or OpenMW for Morrowind, I can no longer see any reason to play one of these games with their original engine ;)
