AFAIK, there is no way to play custom maps available in Steam Workshop.
Is there any way to get custom maps from other places (or even Steam Workshop) as it seems that the game on GOG supports custom maps?

The quick fix to this problem: http://steamworkshopdownloader.com/
Just find what you want to download in the workshop and paste the url to the above link, place the file you download in your Broforce levels folder.

Found a way to play custom maps with the GOG version. At least on macOS: You need to create a folder called Broforce and put the Broforce.app inside, side by side with a folder called Levels. Put all .bfg and .bfc map files there. That's it. Just note that all existing saves, achievements and settings will be lost then. Here's an example of the folder structure: https://i.ibb.co/k2XPBzp/Screenshot-2021-01-17-at-22-17-40.png
