I'm up to the area where you give the guy a helmet and shoot him out of a cannon, I've moved the gong on the next screen so that he hits it, then I get the 'lion' tamer cutscene. Now I have absolutely no idea where to go/what to do from there D:

Edit: Is that is? As in there is nothing else there other than the cutscene?

Nope, dude, there's nothing more - you just get a card and nothing happens. If you lost an hour trying to find a whip in order to get those little guys tame this monster which blocks the path to the "flute" (or whatever it is) than it's hopeless - you just gotta go the infinity area and take the south-eastern path (as far as I remember) in order to get to the place with this monster from the other side. Then you grab the flute, give it to the guy in the far right of the map and the puzzle's solved.

Seeing, that you're in the area, how the hell is one supposed to navigate the huge sphere with movable bouncy critters, that holds one of the area's collectibles? I can't even back out of the room now.

There are at least 2 rooms out there which fit that description, would you care to gimme a screenshot or something? ;).

You can move one on the top of the other...and then you can move them together as a single unit.

How do I get the helmet? I've been trying the ladybug racing part with no luck. Do I need to bring some item to him in exchange?

The way to get the helmet can be found entirely in that room; also, you don't actually need to win the racing minigame.
