With some care, the Lancaster could land (sometimes not) without complete crash killing all, the B17 can't, it complete crashes every time killing all the crew.
That's boring, grinding back after such a crash, to crash again...
The B17 was such a fragile bad lander?
Just aim one wheel, and consider the ship (and crew if no parachute) is utterly ended.
