For some reason, I am getting low FPS in Bloodrayne 1 whenever I am looking around at eye level or higher. Game runs fine when I look at the ground, but goes down to ~15-20 FPS when the environment is visible. I suspect it's got to do with either the fog or the lighting, and it's significantly worse when vampire vision is on.

I have a modern machine so obviously it's not a hardware issue. I assume an i7, a gtx 660, and 8gb RAM should be running this game fine. Still, I tried turning down the graphics but the frame drops are still there. Anyone have a solution? I run the game on Windows 8.1 in Win 98/ME compatibility mode and have syncRetrace=1 in the render.ini

I have same problem , plaing at my laptop witch intel i5 and AMD Radeon R7 M260 (but also integrated graphics that i cannot switch in game) Game works, but at maximum setup slows very much (10 fps) when a lots of objects are close. When i'm putting lowest settings it works better but its strange for that old game even for integrated graphics...
I suppose a me too isn't super helpful.

Laptop,
Nvidia GTX 780M
16G Ram
Intel i7 cpu.

I am playing at 1400x1050 with DirectX and all settings maxed. Frame rate is awful when several enemies are around. It would be great if someone found something.
The fix mentioned here:
http://www.gog.com/forum/bloodrayne/bloodrayne_1_setup_menu_only_letting_me_choose_onboard_graphics/post6
fixes it for me.
Thank you for reporting that. I've since lost my interest in the game so I'll probably not try this any time soon, but I'm marking it as the solution in case anyone stumbles upon this thread.

Odd, the forum post still exists, I guess GOG changed how links to posts work? Anyway to avoid it happening again I'll just paste the answer here:

So the solution is like this:
1) Download WineD3D for Windows, 32 bit version for old games, for example from here: wined3d.adolfintel.com.
2) Copy files d3d8.dll, libwine.dll and wine3d.dll from the downloaded archive to the game directory, where the rayne.exe file resides.
3) Force rayne.exe to use apropriate GPU (in my case Nvidia) instead of Intel HD as you normally do with your GPU driver app.
Also mentioned in that thread, the Wine 1.8 versions don't seem to be working, so use the latest 1.7 version instead.

Edit:
I see there are some newer versions that I haven't tried (up to 1.9.1 as of this posting), if you try them and they work for you let us know!

I've tried the latest version of WineD3D (1.9.1), but the game crashes after the launcher screen. As you can see (attached screenshot) the game detected an nVidia graphics card (even if mine is a GTX 860m, not a GTX 470 ahahah) because I've forced the exe to run with the dedicated graphics card.
If I start the game without the 3 dll files (WineD3D) it doesn't crash, but it runs at 20-21 fps (350+ in the menu, which is strange), which really sucks!

I've also tried WineD3D 1.7.55, but it also crashes after the launcher screen. Any ideas how to fix it?

SOLUTION
1.7.32 fixed the issue! Now I have 90+ fps, that's more like it! Hope it helps others too :)

No they just changed the name of the forum and didn't bother to redirect from the old address.

Have you tried another version?
I tried several versions of the WineD3D and the 2.4 works very fine for me.
Dgvoodoo 2 works best.
