Windows 10 v 2004. (more on the machine itself at the end) I've tried *all* the classic solutions:

Comptibility mode doesn't seem to matter whether I pick XPSP3, XPSP2, VistaSP???, Windows 98/Me. Same results in all cases.

I set the compatibility mode for Cutscene.exe as well.

I put the retrace thing to 1 in RENDER.INI

I put the affinity to CPU 0.

Whatever I've tried, it just quits quietly at the end of the cutscene with the couple and Rayne and the grenade, *or* it quits just after that with a black screen and the complaint about the multithreaded lock.

EDIT: forgot the info on the machine...

i7 7820X. 8 cores, hyperthreaded, nominal clock 3.6 GHz, boost to 4.something. Stock clocks.
64GB RAM
M.2/PCIe SSD for C:
RTX 2080 Ti graphics with NVidia drivers 451.67 Stock clocks. (uh, yeah, I have money, why do you ask?)
Realtek sound
Intel I219(V) network

I am having the same issue, also unsure how to proceed. Game unplayable, cannot get past intro movie.

Same issue over here. Cannot play the game at all. Tried all these things plus a fresh install of course.
I had a similar problem (but without the message about the multithreaded lock). Have you tried disabling the cutscenes (by going to the "video" folder, and renaming "Cutscene.exe") to something else)?
